Student an eyewitness was among the many people attracted to the scene of a fatal inferno that swept through much of the multi-block housing complex in the city's northern district.

A minimum of 36 people have lost their lives in Wednesday's destructive fire currently, with hundreds still missing, leading to expectations that this count will probably rise.

Flames could be witnessed issuing from separate apartments as countless onlookers watched in silence.

A local woman stated that her acquaintances dwell inside the structure and she was staying to hear if they managed to get out.

Harry Cheung, who has lived in block two of the residential estate for more than four decades years, recalled perceiving "a very loud noise" and seeing fire break out in a close block.

"When there's a brush fire, they will utilize choppers and dispense water bombs, but why is there not any deployment and how can they permit additional complexes ablaze?" questioned another occupant of Wang Fuk Court.

"The community is so near to the fire department and we thought the inferno could be extinguished rapidly, but now the fire has expanded. I'm so disappointed," she explained.

The woman mentioned that she had been offered little guidance from the government on where to seek help.

Numerous Tai Po community members had delivered essentials to the impacted residents - consisting of dozens of warm layers and thermal aids.
