Ex- FBI head James Comey has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to congressional representatives and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

His attorney filed the response representing him in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

His attorney stated he would seek to have the legal matter dismissed for multiple reasons including that his defendant, a detractor of Donald Trump, was being singled out.

The former director was indicted shortly after Trump urged his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Legal Proceedings

During the hearing on Wednesday, the defense counsel Mr Fitzgerald informed the court they planned to submit various motions to throw out the case before a trial, arguing the government's case was vindictive and that a federal prosecutor was unlawfully designated to handle the legal matter.

Mr Comey's case was first handled by Erik Siebert, who resigned under influence from Trump after his probe into another opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Legal Setting

The former director seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the legal venue on Wednesday, chatting with his lawyers and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his partner, Patrice Failor and daughter his daughter, a government attorney who the previous administration recently fired.

After listening to the judge read his constitutional guarantees and the pair of allegations against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, James Comey was inquired if he grasped the accusations.

"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he told the proceedings.

Historical Information

The former director was the head of the FBI from four years and was terminated about a few months into the former president's first term as national leader. At the period, the director was directing an examination into foreign election meddling and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and the election effort.

During his tenure, James Comey sparked a counter-response from Democrats when he stated just immediately preceding the national vote that he was examining presidential nominee the candidate's use of a non-governmental email account. Legal actions against Hillary Clinton were never brought, resulting in disapproval from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

The federal government assert James Comey gave untrue statements to Congress during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the election interference investigation. They claim he misled the Senate by stating he had not approved a person at the agency to release to news outlets data about the agency probes.

Government lawyers also allege the defendant of "improperly attempting to sway, block and delay" the committee by making false statements to it.

Personal Comments

Through a recording the former director shared to his Instagram after he was indicted, he stated he was innocent and charged Donald Trump of conducting himself like a "autocrat".

"My family and I have been aware for years that there are ramifications to standing up to the former president," he said. "We refuse to live on our bended knee."
"I am not guilty," he stated further. "Thus initiate a court case."

The accusations against the former director came after Trump posted on social media insisting on his attorney general, Ms Bondi, take legal action against Mr Comey and additional individuals.
