France's Premier Lecornu Resigns After Less Than a 30-Day Period in Power
The nation's PM Lecornu has handed in his resignation, under 24 hours after his government team was unveiled.
The French presidency confirmed the news after Lecornu met the French President for an meeting on the start of the week.
This shock move comes only 26 days after Lecornu was appointed prime minister following the downfall of the prior administration of his predecessor.
Various groups in the French parliament had fiercely criticised the makeup of Lecornu's cabinet, which was mostly similar to the previous one, and threatened to vote it down.
Demands for New Vote and Government Unrest
A number of factions are now clamouring for early elections, with others urging Macron to resign too - although he has consistently affirmed he will not stand down before his term ends in 2027.
"Macron needs to choose: dissolution of parliament or resignation," said Chenu, one of leading figures of the RN party.
The outgoing PM - the previous military head and a supporter of Macron - was the fifth premier in under two years.
Background of Political Turmoil
French politics has been markedly turbulent since last summer, when early legislative polls resulted in a hung parliament.
This has created challenges for each PM to secure enough backing to enact new laws.
The previous administration was defeated in last month after the assembly voted against his austerity budget, which aimed to slash government spending by $51 billion.
Financial Challenges and Stock Response
The nation's budget gap reached nearly 6% of the economy in 2024 and its national debt is 114% of GDP.
That is the third largest government debt in the European monetary union after two southern European nations, and equal to almost 50k euros for each resident.
Markets declined in the Paris bourse after the announcement about the PM broke on Monday.
