The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
